Richard Chawner (Labourer). Birth recorded as Richard Challinor. He married Kezia Woolley under the name Challener.
He was convicted under the name of Richard Chawner at Derby Quarter Session on the 10 Jul 1827 for a term of 7 years for copping topping breaking and destroying in the night time two oak trees and one ash tree in enclosed ground of Gilbert Crompton at Barton Blount, a magistrate. It was 2 years from when he was convicted to when he was transported so 2 years of his sentence was spent in England. He was transported on the Layton, departed Deal, 17 June 1829, arrived Sydney Cove, New South Wales, 8 November 1829. Richard got his freedom after serving 5 years in Australia, a total of 7. Certificate of Freedom is for 20 Oct 1834, and sent back to England on 22 Dec 1834 as reported in the Sydney Herald on 29 Dec.
There is no evidence that he ever stepped foot back in England, or any evidence he remained in Australia. It is assumed he died before 1841.
